What do you think I should do with my fat PS3 (40GB, no BC)? It still has about 2.5 years of warranty on it, and it's got an older firmware on it, so if I had the need, I could install Linux on it, as the option is still there.

I'd sell it and get another slim PS3, if someone out there wants such a PS3. Maybe on eBay?

Or I could just keep it, and cave in and upgrade the firmware...

I don't know if anyone out there who wanted to install Linux on a game console doesn't already have an outdated fat PS3, so maybe it's just wishful thinking that someone would want it... I just haven't updated it because it's in my bedroom and I don't use it that much - the odd game here or there, but mostly videos or music.

Try selling it on eBay with a minimum price that would get you a Slim. If no one bites just upgrade it. Or you could trow it in a time capsule and lock it away for 10 years.

I doubt you would get anything decent for it off eBay. Spend $50 to upgrade the drive if you need to, you'll probably be out of pocket less than paying the difference between a new slim and what you get for the old one.

I say keep it but I'm a mild game hoarder.

I already have a 320GB drive in it, but I would pull it and put the original 40GB back in if I sold it.

I want another slim because I think they're more reliable (my slim has outlasted my first fat, so this isn't exactly an educated guess, more of a .. guess), and the newer ones use even less power and have even less heat output.

I probably will just keep it though, since it's a hassle to sell on eBay. Maybe I'll ask a few of my friends if they'd want to buy it, but the firmware version wouldn't be a selling point to them anyhow. An extra year, year-and-a-half warranty might make it worth it to them, though.
