After many suggestions from fans, EA has finally released an all-new patch for NHL 09 and we've got the details!
This is quite a large patch indeed and is sure to add even more realism to an already stunning game.
Thanks to GagnierA for the tip!

While this is somewhat related as a question, couldn't EA just create a... template [sport] game with a set of specific features, and merely apply patches to update that game's roster, bugfixes, as well as adding features, and other misc. content? Understandably, it would be a download-centric, mostly online-only affair, and while it seems kiiiind of unreasonable an idea, consider this: EA's mainline sports titles, and their subsequent "sequels," are little more than mere upgrades from the version prior...
Well, don't mind my rambling. I don't even play sports games whatsoever, so WTF am I doing, posting this as a reply to something that doesn't concern/involve me in the least?
(Sick day. Pardon me.)

@w.j.R.: Specifically for NHL09, roster updates are automatically downloaded when you go to play online matches, I would assume that this would also be applied to the "Play Now" rosters. But once you start a Dynasty or "Be A Pro", the rosters that are already injected are the ones that are used and can only be modified by trades and cannot be synced by real world changes.
Since the sports game series I play is NHL I can't speak for EA's other games of the genre, but I would assume that the same rules would be applied there. Since most of their resources seem to be tied up in the Madden series, it would only make sense that it would do this as well.
Plus, the NBA (or NCAA, can't remember off the top of my head) has a downloadable companion app that updates the rosters and player attributes (including injuries, trades, performance markers and stats) in real-time. When it was first released it was $1.99, which I believe is still the case.

Now that I'm thinking about it though, that stuff I said about the basketball companion app might not be entirely correct. I don't play the that game, so I was just trying to remember off the top of my head what the description was talking about in the store. This was quite a while ago, but I'm sure I'm not that off.

It should also be said that as many issues as this patch fixes, it's still only a mere 19megs. I should have included that in the tip as well.
It certainly does improve the gameplay in a noticeable way though and makes it more fun since the CPU team doesn't get as many crap goals anymore...lol. Not only that, but players seem to be more manageable when trying to play defensive. Don't know if that's an unintended side effect, but they seem to play their positions better.
